Eagle project:
Forsten 's Tortoise Exhibit for the Chattanooga Zoo
For my project I built an exhibit for the Forsten's Tortoises at the Chattanooga Zoo. When I reached out to the zoo, they had 10 of these tortoises behind the scenes or scattered around the zoo. There was nowhere for guests to learn about the tortoises or their unique native habitat.
The Forsten's Tortoises are only from one island in the whole world–Sulawesi, Indonesia!

How did I find this project?
Originally for my Eagle Scout Project I wanted to spread awareness for womens cardio vascular heatlh. It is the leading cause of death for women in the United States. Women experience heart attacks with different symptoms than men. Many women do not know these important facts. Women are 25% less likely to be successfully resuscitated due to misdiagnosed symptoms, greater bystander effect, lack of awareness, and more(https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/33317326/). Please take care of your heart! The American Heart Association has many resources to learn about women's heart health and are currently fundraising to do more research and care.
I was unable to spread awareness for my project, so I decided to reach out to all the organizations in my community that had improved my experience living here. I am homeschooled so a lot of my educational resources come from community organizations like libraries, museums, and zoos. I visit the zoo often and have had the chance to see some of my favorite animals because of them. I reached out to a lot of organizations, but the Chattanooga Zoo responded very quickly and were excited to worked with me! They gave me a list to choose from and let me meet the Forsten's tortoises I'd be helping. They gave me a lot of freedom on design, and I'm glad I chose to continue with them because throughout the project all of the staff were very positive and helpful.
What all does my project include?
My project includes building the fencing with bamboo, a mural backdrop based on Sulawesi, woodburned nameplates for each tortoise, hutches based on indonesian architecture, and providing information for the exhibit's signs. This website is to explain each part of my project and to thank the people who helped.
